Red Poha Halwa | Soft Coconut Milk Aval Halwa with Jaggery

I made this Red Poha Halwa for Krishna Jayanthi, and it turned out to be such a delicious way to use red aval for a festive sweet. Instead of cooking the poha directly, I first dry-roasted the red poha until crisp, cooled it, and ground it into a fine powder. I then cooked it with homemade jaggery syrup and coconut milk until thick and consistent, finishing it with ghee and toasted muskmelon seeds. The result is a soft, rich red aval halwa with a smooth texture that sets beautifully for slicing and serving.

I especially like this method because roasting and powdering the red poha gives the halwa a lovely texture, while coconut milk makes it rich without needing a large amount of ghee. If you have red poha (red aval/sigappu aval) at home, this is a simple festive sweet to try for Krishna Jayanthi or Gokulashtami.

What is Red Poha Halwa Recipe ?

Red Poha Halwa is a simple sweet made with red poha (red aval/sigappu aval), jaggery and coconut milk. What makes this version different is that we first roast the red poha, grind it into a powder, and then cook it with the jaggery syrup and coconut milk.

As it cooks, the mixture slowly thickens and comes together like a halwa. Once it reaches the right consistency, you can transfer it to a greased bowl, add your favorite toppings, let it set and cut it into pieces.

So, if you have red aval at home and are looking for a Krishna Jayanthi sweet, this is a lovely way to turn it into a rich and soft halwa.

  • Coconut milk – 1½ cups

  • Ghee – 2 tbsp, as required

How to Make Red Poha Halwa

1. Roast the Red Poha

Add 1 cup red poha (red aval) to a pan and dry roast it on medium heat for about 5 minutes. Keep stirring and roast until the poha becomes crisp. Make sure it does not burn or change colour.

Let the roasted red poha cool completely.

2. Grind the Red Poha

Once cooled, transfer the roasted poha to a mixer and grind it into a fine powder. A fine powder helps the halwa turn smooth without a coarse texture.

3. Prepare the Coconut Milk and Jaggery

In the same pan, add 1½ cups coconut milk and the cooled jaggery syrup made with 1 cup jaggery and ½ cup water.

Mix everything well before switching on the heat. This helps combine the jaggery and coconut milk evenly.

4. Add the Red Poha Powder

Add the powdered red poha to the coconut milk mixture. Mix or whisk well to remove any lumps.

Note: I mixed it well with my hand to break up any lumps and get a smooth mixture.

5. Cook Until Thick

Now switch on the heat and cook on medium heat, stirring continuously for about 10–15 minutes.

The mixture will gradually thicken and come together. Keep stirring so the red poha halwa does not stick to the bottom of the pan.

6. Add Ghee

Once the halwa starts becoming thick and consistent, add about 1 spoon of ghee and mix well.

You don’t need to add all the ghee at once. Since coconut milk can release some oil as the halwa cooks, add ghee as required.

7. Set the Halwa

When the red poha halwa becomes thick and leaves the sides of the pan, transfer it to a bowl greased with ghee.

Top with muskmelon seeds or your favourite toppings and allow it to cool and set.

Tips for Making Red Poha Halwa

  • You can use coconut oil instead of ghee if you prefer. It works well with the coconut milk and gives the halwa a nice flavour.
  • Add cashews for topping along with muskmelon seeds. You can lightly roast the cashews in a little ghee or coconut oil before adding them.
  • Adjust the ghee or coconut oil as needed. Coconut milk can release some natural oil while cooking.
  • Roast the red poha carefully. Roast until crisp without changing its colour or burning it, as this helps give the halwa a better texture.
  • Stir continuously while cooking after adding the poha powder to prevent lumps and keep the halwa smooth.
  • Let the halwa set before cutting. If you want neat pieces, allow it to cool completely before slicing.
