Ingredients

  • 1 cup 200 g raw rice
  • ½ cup 100 g whole green gram (pachai payaru)
  • 1 tablespoon fenugreek seeds
  • 4 garlic cloves peeled
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ cup fresh coconut milk
  • Water as needed

Equipment

  • Pressure Cooker
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Measuring cups & spoons
  • Potato Masher or Ladle

Method

  1. Wash the raw rice, whole green gram, and fenugreek seeds well. Soak them overnight or for at least 4 hours. (Soaking is optional.)
  2. Transfer the soaked ingredients to a pressure cooker. Add garlic cloves, cumin seeds, salt, and enough water to cover the ingredients.
  3. Pressure cook for 2 whistles. Allow the pressure to release naturally.
  4. Open the cooker and gently mash the cooked rice and green gram until soft.
  5. Pour in the fresh coconut milk and mix well.
  6. Simmer for 2–3 minutes over low heat.
  7. Serve hot for breakfast, lunch, or a light dinner.

Notes

Simmer gently after adding coconut milk and avoid boiling vigorously.
Soaking the rice and green gram helps them cook faster and gives the kanji a softer texture.
Use Fresh Coconut Milk
